Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; up to the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The seascape, in particular, is a very popular theme.
A recurring theme among artists. First, for the lyricism implicit in the views overlooking the sea or romantic images of small harbors. Second, because the depiction of aquatic surfaces allows painters to unleash their chromatic flair, thanks to refined interplays of reflections and reverberations.
Lombardo's style draws inspiration from a naïve conception of artistic creation, characterized by a conscious yet instinctive simplification of subjects, aimed at restoring the primary values of purity and simplicity in the representation. The artist's simplification of reality, however, embodies several elements of creativity, evident in the complexity of the design and the exploration of color. Indeed, we find a refined chromaticism that somehow evokes the Chiaristi group and painters like Umberto Lilloni. In Lombardo's simplification and his light colors, we find the same desire to dematerialize perceptible reality, to lighten and transfigure it into a representation that is essential yet imbued with a minimalist lyricism.
There is no precise biographical information about the Lombard artist. Specializing primarily in landscapes, his style displays a marked naive attitude and a certain connection to the Chiaristi group. A clear desire to seek an infantilism in his representation is evident, with the aim of imbuing his artwork with primordial values of purity and innocence.
