Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In this work, artist Gimmy Longhi demonstrates his mature post-Impressionist language. This is evident in the fact that, first and foremost, the artist constructs the representation solely through color. Drawing is eliminated to fully unleash the expressive potential of the brushstrokes, which take on a decidedly structural value. The pictorial approach, however, is light and calligraphic, moving across different dimensional planes to give form to the objects the painter wishes to represent. The entire composition is based on the contrast between white and the chromatic zones. The forms are synthesized quickly and effectively, and the scene is imbued with vibrations that are not only luminous and atmospheric, but also existential.
Gimmy Longhi was an artist originally from Gallarate, born in 1922 and passed away in 1993. Throughout his career, he focused primarily on classical and traditional genres such as landscape and portraiture, developing an impeccable naturalism tinged with an impressionistic pictorial lyricism. He received numerous awards. His works are held in public and private collections.
