Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The present work is part of a series of ink drawings in which the artist Lorenzo Gigli depicts the theme of motherhood, which, linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child, is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the entire history of both Western and Eastern art. It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly connecting it to the Christian religion.
In his paintings and prints, artist Lorenzo Gigli stands out for a rather objective style, where the exaltation of plastic values is the formal approach adopted to bring to life a folk world with fairytale and, at times, grotesque overtones. This makes this work particularly interesting, as it shows us a completely new side of this artist: a synthetic Lorenzo Gigli, who relies entirely on rapid strokes in a masterful display of immediacy. Despite the minimalism of his formal means, Lorenzo Gigli manages to create vivid and realistic representations, with a sharp brushstroke that describes his subjects and imbues them with existential vibrations. Furthermore, his ink drawings dedicated to the theme of motherhood are distinguished by the artist's delicate depiction of intimate, familial affection, thanks to the unity of the composition that inextricably links the scene's protagonists in a harmonious fusion.
Lorenzo Gigli was born in Recanati in 1896 and emigrated to Argentina in 1913. In 1925, he held his first solo exhibition in Buenos Aires; it marked the beginning of a long and uninterrupted artistic career. He spent a long time in Recanati, where he remained until 1930, creating works inspired by the Recanati landscape and portraying peasants and workers. During his stay in Recanati, he exhibited at the Rome Quadrennial and the Galleria Bardi in Milan. In 1928 and 1930, he participated in the Venice Biennale. Upon returning to Argentina, he was appointed professor of drawing at the Manuel Belgrano National Academy of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Buenos Aires. He passed away in the Argentine capital in 1983.
