Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings.
Lorenzo Palazzi's painting style is closely connected to the artist's formative years, the Labronica School, which developed a highly refined style of landscape and genre painting based on the influences of Post-Impressionism and Post-Macchiaiolism. Indeed, the entire compositional structure of the work is based on extremely rapid, cursive brushwork, sketching the subjects with a few rapid strokes. The sense of immediacy in the rendering is striking. Likewise, the emphasis on color is striking, with dense brushstrokes featuring a light-giving white.
Lorenzo Palazzi was a painter from Livorno, born in 1921 and died in 1990. He trained under the guidance of his grandfather, Professor Anselmi, a restorer at the National Museums. His entire artistic career was marked by genre painting typical of Livorno, achieving considerable critical and public success. Palazzi participated in the first Quadriennale dell'Arte in Turin and subsequently in the 2000 International Art Fair in Bologna.
