Lorenzo Palazzi - A stroll along the seaside promenade in Livorno

The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings. Artist Lorenzo Palazzi's favorite iconographic themes are genre scenes, including episodes from everyday life, charming processions of young priests, or curious scenes of sailors and nuns strolling along the seafront.

Lorenzo Palazzi's painting style is closely connected to the artist's formative years, the Labronica School, which developed a highly refined style of landscape and genre painting based on the influences of Post-Impressionism and Post-Macchiaiolism. Indeed, the entire compositional structure of Palazzi's works is based on an extremely rapid, cursive brushstroke that sketches the subjects with a few rapid strokes. The sense of immediacy in the rendering is striking. Likewise, the importance of color is striking, with its denseness and some brushstrokes filled with a light-giving white.

Lorenzo Palazzi was a painter from Livorno, born in 1921 and died in 1990. He trained under the guidance of his grandfather, Professor Anselmi, a restorer at the National Museums. His entire artistic career was marked by genre painting typical of Livorno, achieving considerable critical and public success. Palazzi participated in the first Quadriennale dell'Arte in Turin and subsequently in the 2000 International Art Fair in Bologna.
