Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
This work is a fascinating variation on the theme of Lorenzo Tornabuoni's portrait, always striving for a personal exploration of expressive means. In this case, the image is constructed against a monochrome background using a subtle graphic line. Through the simplicity of this line, Tornabuoni manages to depict the subject's physiognomy while also endowing it with remarkable visual impact.
A Roman artist born in 1934, Lorenzo Tornabuoni's artistic career began in the 1960s, exhibiting in various galleries. In Rome, he exhibited at the Galleria Giulia and the Galleria Gabbiano, then at the Galleria Forni in Bologna. Lorenzo Tornabuoni participated in numerous art exhibitions, including the Michetti Painting Prize in Francavilla a Mare in 1966, Tempo dell'Immagine in Bologna in 1967, the Fourth Biennial of Bolzano in 1971, and the 10th Quadriennale d'Arte in Rome in 1973. His paintings have also been exhibited in several group shows abroad. He has collaborated with writers and journalists, illustrating their texts.
