Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as an independent subject began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also became a way of interpreting reality.
The depiction of flowers is a recurring theme in the work of Genoese painter Loris Ferrari, but her aim, however, is not to imitate nature. For Ferrari, the floral image (which iconographically appears emptied of its form, a slender stem performing a graceful movement) is more of an unconscious reflection of an interiority. The flower, therefore, in its formal synthesis, becomes a Symbolist-Expressionist icon of the unconscious, in a pursuit that brings Ferrari closer to that of American painter Georgia O'Keeffe.
Loris Ferrari (the stage name of Maria Luisa Ferrari) was a Genoese painter born in 1926 and died in 1987. Born into an artistic family, it was Berto Ferrari who introduced her to the world of painting. Her first exhibition was held at the Galleria Rotta in Genoa in 1956. Her solo shows include those in Milan (with De Chirico as a guest), Rome, and Spoleto during the Festival dei Due Mondi. In 1967, she exhibited at the International Gallery in New York.
