Description of the work
Description of the work
Paintings depicting sailing ships or boats can be considered part of the genre scene group, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. In particular, the depiction of simple sailing ships or other vessels, outside the historical context of a naval battle, began in the 17th and 18th centuries, influenced by travel and exploration of new continents.
Louis Papaluca's style relies on extraordinary technique and dexterity, allowing him to achieve a perfect imitation of his chosen subject. Reality is transferred to the painting down to the smallest detail, as we can see in the depiction of the ship. The artist also takes particular care in depicting the waves of the sea, and is extraordinary in his depiction of every ripple. The sunlight reflects off the waves, shimmering with reflections and glares. The artist achieves all this with a touch that manages to reproduce every detail in an almost miniature manner, while also employing accentuated pictorial effects to lend greater dynamism to the scene.
Louis Papaluca (1890-1934) stood out for his portraits (primarily gouaches) of important yachts and steamships at sea, often set in the Gulf of Naples, where he lived and worked, with Mount Vesuvius in the background. The work is presented in a frame.
