Paintings depicting sailing ships or boats can be considered part of the genre scene group, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. In particular, the depiction of simple sailing ships or other vessels, outside the historical context of a naval battle, began in the 17th and 18th centuries, influenced by travel and exploration of new continents.

Louis Papaluca's style relies on extraordinary technique and dexterity, allowing him to achieve a perfect imitation of his chosen subject. Louis Papaluca (1890-1934) stood out for his portraits (primarily gouaches) of important yachts and steamships at sea, often set in the Gulf of Naples, where he lived and worked, with Mount Vesuvius in the background. The work is presented in a frame.
