Description of the work
Description of the work
Born in Naples on October 18, 1634, Luca Giordano, known as Luca Fapresto for the speed with which he managed to complete even the most demanding works, had the merit of "reinventing the Roman Baroque in an aggressive and almost unbridled version: Rubens, Cortona, and Bernini are always behind him. But it is clear that to leap better, he took a long run-up by choosing, among the masters, Titian and Veronese", explains Stefano Causa. Apprenticed to the great Jusepe de Ribera , he trained by observing with sensitive originality the recognized masters, such as Michelangelo and Raphael , also appreciating the style of Caravaggio , from whom, however, he was separated by a profound abyss, above all human, character. While Caravaggio has the devil in the body of reality and proceeds from painting to nature, Giordano takes the opposite path. Painting interests him a thousand times more. After all, while Caravaggio was what you would call a bad boy; Giordano is an upright family man. He traveled to travel: but driven by the smell of money. Caravaggio's travels trace the itinerary of a fugitive; Giordano's are a model of self-promotional strategy. The role of the cursed artist would only have slowed him down," Causa continues. Over the course of his prolific career, Luca Giordano had the opportunity to work for some of the most prestigious commissions of the time, from the Abbey of Montecassino to the Dome of the Corsini Chapel in Florence, and today his works are exhibited in the world's most important museums, such as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the National Gallery in London.
