Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings.
One of the recurring themes in Luca Pignatelli's artistic production is his interest in urban architecture and the rational compositional lines it expresses. In this work, we can appreciate how the artist seeks to highlight this interplay of lines, reconstructing the building, however, through his own, more abstract vision. This is also complemented by a painterly gesture that carries an instinctive component, yet enters into a perfect dialogue with the geometric nature of the architectural component.
Luca Pignatelli was born in 1962, son of Ercole Pignatelli. Having graduated in Architecture from the Polytechnic University of Milan, his study of this discipline would form an important foundation for his artistic language. He held his first solo exhibition at the Antonia Jannone Gallery in 1978. His research focuses on large-scale works, often created on unusual supports: hemp tarpaulins, wood, iron, and assembled paper.
