Description of the work
Description of the work
Luca Pignatelli's artistic production blends diverse styles, integrating figurative references with expressive media that even hint at Informalism. Luca Pignatelli's work is a constant process of collecting, recovering, and reworking iconographic elements from history and art, and beyond. He layers and transforms a diverse archive of collective and universal images, abstract and figurative, from ancient and contemporary eras, according to what critics have defined as a "Theater of Memory."
One of the recurring themes in Luca Pignatelli's artistic production is the train. Many of his works are crafted like antique postcards depicting old steam locomotives. The use of paper and monochrome techniques achieve a vintage patina that makes these works so captivating. The contemporaneity and originality of the approach lie in the way Pignatelli breaks down and reconstructs the image according to the rules of Expressionism and the complexity of Cubist space.
Luca Pignatelli was born in 1962, son of Ercole Pignatelli. Having graduated in Architecture from the Polytechnic University of Milan, his study of this discipline would form an important foundation for his artistic language. He held his first solo exhibition at the Antonia Jannone Gallery in 1978. His research focuses on large-scale works, often created on unusual supports, such as canvas, wood, iron, and assembled paper.
