Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

The painting is a typical example of Lucia Sarto's work, a large portion of which was devoted to elegant female figures from the turn of the century. This artist's true distinctiveness lies not so much in her depiction of truth (in fact, the figure appears idealized, even somewhat stereotypical), but in the quality of her pictorial interpretation. Lucia Sarto's brushstrokes are powerfully effective, dense, and vaporous. She blurs the subjects' contours, rendering them evanescent, without however altering the image's interpretation in the slightest. In short, the painter is capable of combining high-level pictorial effects with a delicate, respectful depiction of the subject. In this work, unlike Lucia Sarto's more typical work, darker hues are chosen instead of pinks and whites.

Lucia Sarto was born in the province of Udine in 1950. Her artistic training took place between Venice and Turin. Her career took off in the Piedmontese capital, where she participated in important group exhibitions and was named Painter of the Year with a solo exhibition at the Palazzo della Regione. She has held over one hundred exhibitions to her credit, at least half of which are solo shows, both in Italy and abroad. Her painting style is described as "Romantic Realism."
