Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The painting is a typical example of Lucia Sarto's oeuvre, a large portion of which features refined female figures set in elegant turn-of-the-century genre scenes. This artist's true distinction lies not so much in her depiction of truth (the figure appears idealized, even somewhat stereotypical), but in the quality of her pictorial interpretation. Lucia Sarto's brushstroke is, in fact, highly effective, dense, and vaporous. She blurs the subjects' contours, rendering them evanescent, yet without altering the image's readability in the slightest. In short, the painter is capable of combining elevated pictorial effects with a delicate, respectful depiction of the subject.
Lucia Sarto was born in the province of Udine in 1950. Her artistic training took place between Venice and Turin. Her career took off in the Piedmontese capital, where she participated in important group exhibitions and was named Painter of the Year with a solo exhibition at the Palazzo della Regione. She has held over one hundred exhibitions to her credit, at least half of which are solo shows, both in Italy and abroad. Her painting style is described as "Romantic Realism."
