Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion.
This interpretation of the theme of motherhood is extremely exemplary for understanding the language developed by the artist Luciano Ferro. Three essential elements characterize his painting: the exaltation of plastic values; expressionistic deformation; and the gestural nature of the paint application. Regarding the first characteristic, it is clear that the artist seeks to fully enhance the form of his subjects, with an accentuated plasticity that determines the figures, constructed with a strong black line. These accentuated plastic volumes are then deformed by the artist, as if they were made of a malleable and stretchable material. Luciano Ferro shapes his subjects to highlight existential and emotional tensions, and for this reason his deformation has a decidedly expressionistic character. This also applies to the palette he uses, where the choice of color reflects specific symbolic connotations (see the bright red that characterizes the two subjects). At the same time, Ferro's expressionism is also expressed on a formal level, in a very complex and elaborate style, determined by an agitated gesturality.
Artist Luciano Ferro stands out for his highly original pictorial production, in which the exaltation of plastic values is combined with an expressionist verve that involves both the form of the subjects and the pictorial layering.
