Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconographic subject of Christ's face has ancient origins and is connected to the legend of Veronica. The episode in which Christ's true likeness was imprinted on a cloth used by a woman to wipe his face is also recounted in the Gospels. This woman was identified as Veronica, likely due to the similarity with the Latin words "Vera Icon." Since the early Christian era, the face of Christ has been the object of particular veneration. Its depiction has pervaded the entire history of Western art. From the first iconic representations of the early Christian and early Middle Ages, we gradually moved on to increasingly naturalistic (beginning with the Renaissance) or realistic (typical of Flemish art) depictions.
In this interpretation of Christ's suffering face, artist Luciano Manara emphasizes the dramatic nature of the work, clearly accentuating the departure from naturalistic representation. The sense of pain and suffering is conveyed through an expressionist synthesis, through which the physiognomic truth of the face gives way to a process of abstraction with a precise conceptual value. Thus, the figure of Christ is constructed through broad, coarse brushstrokes and broad, curved lines that delineate his face. The hair emphasizes the intense drama of the representation. Finally, the color also transcends the confines of realism, adopting more spiritual than naturalistic tones.
Artist Luciano Manara, in his pictorial production, demonstrates a highly eclectic spirit. Indeed, the variety of subjects chosen also corresponds to a differentiation of stylistic registers. His language can range from the most classical and rigorous figurative to expressionistic experiments.
