Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
Luciana Manelli's artistic language presents several interesting aesthetic themes. A recurring theme is her monumental female figures, delineated with a pictorial style that tends toward expressionism. Indeed, the artist does not focus on physiognomic details, seeking instead iconic types, conveying broader meanings and a high degree of symbolic value. Luciana Manelli's synthesis of form occurs primarily through color, and thus, despite their monumentality, her female figures appear extremely fluid and sinuous. Formally, Luciana Manelli is also distinguished by a pronounced pictorialism: this is particularly evident when the artist lingers over the description of flowers, indulging in a polychrome, impressionistic-style hatching that captures all the chromatic vibrations.
Luciana Manelli was born on May 13, 1946, in Pinarolo Po, where she lived until moving to Milan to attend the Brera Art School. There, she studied painting with Professor Silvio Consadori and figure and anatomy with Professor Ugo Vittore Bartolini. She then continued her studies in Milan, enrolling at the Academy of Fine Arts, where she specialized in painting techniques under Professor Domenico Purificato. Since 1971, she has taught painting at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts.
