Description of the work
Description of the work
Animal portraits in art have ancient origins, appearing even in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true life portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks containing drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era. Luciano Minguzzi's abstract works are often inspired by animal figures. His roosters are famous, but in this case the subject of the work appears to be another bird.
Better known for his sculptures, Luciano Minguzzi also produces a highly refined range of prints. As we can see from this etching, as in his sculptures, he begins with phenomenal reality and distorts it for expressive purposes. This deformation operates both on the level of formal synthesis and on that of Cubist decomposition. The result is essentially an abstract work of art that maintains only a tenuous connection with sensory data. Formally, the structure is constructed with a broad black line and a broken, angular progression.
Luciano Minguzzi was the most important Bolognese sculptor of the twentieth century. Born in 1911 and died in 2004, he initially trained at the Academy of his city, and later, thanks to a scholarship, he spent time in Paris and London. By 1933, he had already won his first prize at the Rome Quadrennial. After the war, he created the important Monument to the Partisans at Porta Lame in Bologna.
