Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic currents. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. In this case, Minguzzi moves within the figurative realm, but exerts expressionistic overtones.
In this sculpture, we see Luciano Minguzzi's pursuit of an artificial aesthetic. He begins with naturalism but takes the liberty of modifying it to create an expressive work. The figure is deformed, its limbs elongated, its body swollen or tapered, to achieve a rhythm, a movement that brings balance to the composition.
Luciano Minguzzi was the most important Bolognese sculptor of the twentieth century. Born in 1911 and died in 2004, he initially trained at the Academy of his city, and later, thanks to a scholarship, he spent time in Paris and London. By 1933, he had already won his first prize at the Rome Quadrennial. After the war, he created the important Monument to the Partisans at Porta Lame in Bologna.
