Description of the work
Description of the work
Animal portraits in art have ancient origins, even appearing in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true life portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era.
In this sculpture, we see Luciano Minguzzi's pursuit of an artificial aesthetic. He begins with naturalism, yet takes the liberty of modifying it to create an expressive work. The figure is deformed according to the dictates of a sculptural approach that, paradoxically, can be described as pictorial. Drawing on the models of late nineteenth-century sculpture, of which Rodin is the greatest exponent, and in Italy, Medardo Rosso, a key figure, the subject's surface is animated in a vibrant modeling, rich in vitality and expressionism. Thus, the bronze, though static, manages to interact with the space, making the work dynamic.
Luciano Minguzzi was the most important Bolognese sculptor of the twentieth century. Born in 1911 and died in 2004, he initially trained at the Academy of his city, and later, thanks to a scholarship, he spent time in Paris and London. By 1933, he had already won his first prize at the Rome Quadrennial. After the war, he created the important Monument to the Partisans at Porta Lame in Bologna.
