Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In this work, artist Luciano R. Fabbri confirms his constant quest for experimentation, even when tackling a traditional theme like landscape. He does so with a conceptual painting in which, while remaining essentially faithful to the recording of sensory data, the language adopted is decidedly abstract. This paradox arises from the choice of a view that already embodies the cardinal principle of abstraction: that of communicating the artist's perception and sensitivity to what can be experienced through the senses. Fabbri achieves this goal by creating what can undeniably be defined as a landscape view, yet its very atmospheric characteristics almost revert to informality. The dense mist, which pervades the space with a dull light, creates a vibrant uniformity of humid vapors, in which the only reference is the portion of sea surface visible in the foreground. Even that which should be form is completely transfigured in this operation of natural abstraction conceived by Fabbri. Indeed, the two sails and their reflection, seen in the distance, are rendered with a very light, gestural, pictorial vibration. But the artist's experimentation doesn't stop there, as the composition is conceived as a diptych, proposing a comparison between two different moments in time and, consequently, between two different lighting situations. The reference to the technological medium of photography seems evident in the beauty of a work that communicates diverse conceptual insights through the medium of painting.
As we can see from an analysis of this work, the artist Luciano R. Fabbri stands out for his experimental nature, which leads him to find highly original compositional solutions. His work combines an ironic edge with a desire and desire to renew the representational modes of the work, in line with typical trends in contemporary art of the 1970s, such as reflections on the perception of reality and the mediation of technological means.
