Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this sculpture certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. It is a type of subject that can be traced back to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau, Bocklin, and Puvis des Chavannes, who, despite using a substantially figurative language, developed intellectually complex iconographies, full of symbolic and allegorical references.
The complex and refined iconography of Lucio Oliveri's sculptures always plays with the human body, with the presence of allusive, barely hinted anatomical details. Limbs are depicted with an expressionism that alters their forms, elongating them, hollowing them out from within. Hands, bodies, and faces appear suspended in space and time. All this comes together in a composition of harmonious and elegant lines where the sinuous rhythm of the human body always plays a leading role.
Lucio Oliveri was born in Milan in 1934, where he lives and works. His passion for sculpture began at the age of twenty, when he decided to create a plasticine portrait of his deceased father. In the 1970s, he trained at the Centro Artistico Culturale Milanese. He quickly acquired a figurative language that he later applied to his symbolic and elegantly allusive creations. His career has been marked by numerous awards and he has held numerous solo exhibitions both in Italy and abroad.
