Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. In the case of the present work, we can see how the artist Lucio Pietropaoli was fascinated by an ethnic subject, inspired by South American customs. The bright, warm colors that characterize this folkloristic suggestion offered the painter the opportunity to develop his expressionist language, based on a harmonious distribution of chromatic zones.
As we can see from this painting, Lucio Pietropaoli's artistic production fits perfectly into a pictorial movement that combines realist/folkloric themes with a predominantly expressionist language. Indeed, while the subject is ethnically inspired, the style embraces a synthetic interpretation of reality. In a two-dimensional space, everything is simplified to transfigure reality in an expressive and symbolic sense. The painter moves beyond the particular to arrive at an iconic representation with universal characteristics. The process of abstraction, therefore, is conducted by the painter to extract the essence from sensory data. The subject is thus resolved in a juxtaposition of chromatic zones, with vivid and brilliant colors, in which the volume of the subjects and their physiognomies are lost. In this way, Pietropaoli creates an image charged with primary, immutable values, thanks to its expressive essentiality and chromatic strength. The compact distribution of color, reminiscent of Gauguin's à plat, is achieved through a dense, full-bodied application. Light fills the entire scene, further crystallizing it into a timeless dimension.
Artist Lucio Pietropaoli is the protagonist of an interesting and original pictorial production, in which the coloristic suggestion inspired by folkloristic themes is transfigured into an expressionist style based on a balance of chromatic zones.
