Description of the work
Description of the work
Paintings depicting sailing ships or boats can be considered genre scenes, which depict an aspect of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. In particular, the depiction of simple sailing ships or other vessels, outside the historical context of a naval battle, began in the 17th and 18th centuries, influenced by travel and exploration of new continents. The subject of boats, however, as in this work by artist Lucio Ranucci, draws on a different influence, namely the world of fishing and, therefore, work. In short, the subject of boats has, in Ranucci, a certain social connotation, a celebration of the fishermen's lives, a theme also found in his other works.
In Lucio Ranucci's pictorial production, the exaltation of plasticity plays a fundamental role. His subjects are constructed with a strong sense of geometry and inserted into a complex space with a process clearly derived from Cubism. These prerogatives are also found in the following work, in which the artist opts for a more realistic type of representation, compared to the greater abstraction found in other works. The painting is structured like a true spatial box, constructed, however, according to multiple guidelines. The space, in fact, is not univocal and can accommodate, from different perspectives, the geometric and solid volumes of the boats. In this painting, Ranucci uses a clear black line to construct the forms, while the color is applied with vibrant brushstrokes.
Lucio Ranucci was born in 1925 in Perledo. In 1947, he moved to Latin America, where he lived for 16 years. In addition to working in a variety of casual jobs (including sailor, hearse driver, and photographer), Ranucci also worked in journalism and theater. He held numerous exhibitions during this period. Having returned to Italy as Costa Rican ambassador, he lived and worked, holding solo exhibitions in Italy, France, and the United States.
