Description of the work
Description of the work
Social themes in art began to gain prominence in the mid-19th century, coinciding with the spread of social questions throughout European societies. The work of painters such as Millet and Daumier, for example, favored subjects related to life in the fields, factory work, or strikes. In Italy, among the first painters to engage deeply with social themes were Pellizza da Volpedo and, in the contemporary era, Renato Guttuso. Lucio Sinigaglia also followed this trend, and his favorite subjects were often peasants, depicted through his original and personal artistic language, which combines contemporaneity with an authentic and sincere description of a typical social reality.
Artist Lucio Sinigaglia's aim is to offer a simplified interpretation of reality, seeking new values of purity in representation. For this reason, his painting style can be described as naïve, yet expresses itself in a highly classical and traditional manner. His language is essentially figurative and finds its fullest expression in the depiction of the rural world. However, the artist manages to infuse tradition with his originality and personal touch, precisely through his pursuit of purity in representation that defines his style. Concretely, this is expressed in a fluid technique that resolves subjects with a few, quick but incisive strokes. Objects almost dematerialize in the lightness of the glazes. Even in terms of color, the artist favors decidedly pale tones, full of light.
Lucio Sinigaglia was born in San Giovanni Lupatoto in 1954. From childhood, he loved to draw everything that caught his eye. Through his unwavering simplicity, he learned to love nature and its intrinsic values: life in the open air, working in the fields, the rhythm of the seasons, and people who are poor but rich within. Self-taught, he never wanted to "go to painting school." He created his works for himself, giving them as gifts to those who asked.
Then, in 1998, he began exhibiting his work and participating in several group shows. He quickly became known for his freestyle, completely detached from traditional aesthetic canons, which preserves and conveys a child's wonder at his surroundings and an instinctive, surprising sense of color. Sinigaglia's growing recognition has led him to exhibit in shows throughout Italy and Europe.
