Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to convey their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

Billy Malaman's depictions of animals and Native American-inspired characters are based on a consciously simplified language, aimed at reclaiming simplicity and purity while still maintaining high aesthetic values. For this reason, his style can be described as a kind of naïve, combining simplification with a refined use of color. The subjects, therefore, undergo a process of abstraction, conducted along essential lines yet maintaining a perfect overall balance of the composition's volumes. This rigor, however, is broken by the painter's palette, made up of bright, luminous colors.

His great-grandparents, of French origin, were avid travelers from birth, even to the point of being born on a state railway carriage traveling between Modane and Bardonecchia on a cold day in 1939. It seems that from these origins he inherited a love of travel and new experiences. Luigi Billy Malaman began painting at a very young age on cardboard and canvas, later moving on to painting, particularly on tanned hides stretched over wooden supports. Self-taught, he expresses in a personal and vigorous way, through cheerful and vibrant colors, the vitality of his fast horses, the grit of the wild beasts caring for their young with love, yet with arrogance and character. He also leaves room for landscapes captured by warm brushstrokes and expressive strokes that open the heart to adventure.
