Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The "seascape" in particular is a recurring theme among artists. First, for the lyricism implicit in views overlooking the sea or in romantic images of small harbors. Second, because the depiction of aquatic surfaces allows painters to give free rein to their chromatic flair, thanks to refined interplays of reflections and reverberations.
In this work, Luigi Bisotti, compared to the typically post-Impressionist language of his floral works, pushes towards an even more expressionist formal style. Indeed, the seascape in this work appears to be the subject of even more pronounced stylization and synthesis. The figures of boats are rendered with a deliberately rough stroke, as is the space of the work, which is created through a material application of color that even recalls informal poetics. The artist's gestures prevail in the essentiality of the representation, in a layer of color that appears engraved, almost like a cave painting, yet with an extraordinary contemporary sensibility that places this painting within a complete expressionist aesthetic.
Luigi Bisotti was born in Monticelli d'Ongina in 1916 and passed away in 2013. His pictorial production focused on in-depth research on the theme of flowers. His study of this subject led him to experiment with various stylistic registers, from the most realist to the post-impressionist and expressionist, always achieving remarkable results. His works are also distinguished by the purity and brilliance of their colors, always arranged in a balanced and harmonious relationship. He held several solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad, including the 1982 New York Expo. He was awarded the Premio Europa d'Oro in 1980.
