Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
This work is exemplary of a series in which Luigi Brambati creates genre scenes with a popular feel. In these works, the artist displays a certain tendency toward an expressionist approach to his subjects, which heightens the sense of authenticity and immediacy of the representation. The overall freshness of the execution is further ensured by the complex application of color, based on continuous overlapping layers. The artist does not focus on the physiognomic accuracy of his subjects, but rather aims to construct a compositional and chromatic whole that establishes a strong empathetic connection with the viewer.
Luigi Brambati was an artist born in Castiglione d'Adda in 1925 and died in Milan in 1983. He trained at the Castello Sforzesco school. He exhibited his works at the Permanente di Brera and collaborated regularly with the Ponterosso gallery. He was primarily a landscape painter, drawn to lagoon views.
