Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the work was faithfully taken from the central panel of the disjointed "Baglioni Altarpiece", created by Raphael Sanzio in 1507. The work, preserved in the Borghese Gallery in Rome, depicts the episode of the carrying of the Dead Christ among the mourners.
This work offers a remarkable fidelity to the Raphaelesque prototype, reinterpreted with a truly original and aesthetically striking technique. The drawing was created by Luigi Caiazzo with meticulous gold leaf gilding on wood and copper in relief. All the complexity of the Baglioni Altarpiece is captured in a precious transposition that, with an elegant copper wire, traces the contours of the figures, volumes, and draperies, describing the landscape and vegetation. This wire stands out against the light of the exquisite gold leaf that covers the entire panel. Luigi Caiazzo's drawing skill with this unique technique is extraordinary, in the meticulous detail and in his ability to convey the complexity of the subject with a precious and calligraphic means of expression.
Luigi Caiazzo invented this unique technique, combining gilding of the panel with copper engraving in relief. This work, inspired by Raphael's Baglioni Altarpiece, took eight years to complete.
