Luigi Canepa - Stratopittura 122

Luigi Canepa is an artist originally from Genoa, born in 1941. A sculptor and painter, his work is highly diverse, thanks to an aptitude for experimenting with new techniques. The works in this series are called Stratopitture. These paintings are created by layering tempera paint (enriched with other elements) on a wooden base. The design is created by scraping and carving away the surface, revealing the underlying colors. It's essentially a colored bas-relief, where the relief is more evident when illuminated by raking light.
