Luigi Carnevali - Flowers and Apples

The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also becomes a way of interpreting reality, as it did for the Cubists or Giorgio Morandi.

This work highlights Luigi Carnevali's Post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is entirely compressed into the foreground, allowing no spatial depth. The painter's aim is not to capture the tangible details of the fruits and flowers, but to capture their very essence, their substance. To this end, the brushstrokes, rich in texture, intervene, which, despite the essentiality of the representation, fleshes out the objects, breaking them down into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life within them.

Luigi Carnevali was born in Rome in 1884. He trained with Ruggero Panerai, who introduced him to the Macchiaiol movement. Carnevali participated in numerous exhibitions not only in Italy but also abroad (Rome, Sanremo, Genoa, Rovereto, Chicago, New York, Bern). Among the awards he received were the gold medal at the Mostra d'Arte Sacra in Naples in 1950 and the honorary diploma at the Second Abruzzese Biennale in 1956.
