Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the equestrian monument, or the man on horseback, has very ancient origins. It dates back to the classical world, the earliest example of which is the "Rampin Knight," and it had a fundamental political importance for Roman art. Generally, these are sculptures in the round, but there are also cases where this subject appears on painted supports. The theme of the man on horseback has pervaded the entire history of art, not only Western art, and has become a subject of research for contemporary artists such as Marino Marini, Arturo Martini, and Aligi Sassu.
The work presents an expressionist language. The subjects have been subjected to a marked formal synthesis that reduces them to pure chromatic zones. Furthermore, the colors do not reflect natural truth, but rather pursue spiritual meanings. The formal work is extraordinary, with the dense brushstrokes exerting great structural force in constructing the subjects' volumes.
Maurizio Carnevali was born in Villa San Giovanni in 1949. He is a painter, sculptor, and copperplate engraver. He trained first in Paris, where he met Picasso, and then in Milan, where he frequented Renato Guttuso's studio. He has traveled extensively and gained diverse experiences, but continues to live and work in Lamezia Terme. He paints primarily landscapes, still lifes, etchings, and tempera.
