Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws inspiration from an Informal aesthetic. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
Luigi Montanarini's artistic language is extremely gestural. His style can certainly be considered a variation of Abstract Expressionism, in that a certain instinct guides his hand in the application of brushstrokes. The artist, however, always seeks a certain balance within the composition. This is primarily in the direction of solids and voids, between gestural brushstrokes and a neutral background. And, above all, in achieving a chromatic harmony that is the true hallmark of Luigi Montanarini's work.
Luigi Montanarini was born in Florence in 1906 and died in Rome in 1998. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence under Felice Carena. Initially, he showed a leaning toward a more traditionalist style of painting. Only in 1965 did his informal style emerge. He won an Acquisto Prize at the fourth edition of the Spoleto Prize. In 1965, he became director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and a member of UNESCO, positions he held until 1976.
