Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In this female face, Luigi Pignataro demonstrates his ability to characterize his subjects, especially through an intensely expressionistic use of color. Pignataro's trademark is the application of paint with a broad, rapid stroke, which gives the subject expressiveness and character. The immediate application seems almost impulsive, yet Pignataro manages to achieve a natural rendering of the movement of the hair and the mobility of the facial features. The composition is based on a harmonious balance between light and shadow in a play of vivid reflections.
Born in Montalcino in 1943, Luigi Pignataro worked in Florence and abroad. A painter, sculptor, engraver, mosaicist, and set designer, he studied at the School of Art in Rome, where he studied fresco painting under Alberto Ziveri and held exhibitions on Via Margutta. He later had a studio in Brussels and held solo and group exhibitions. In the 1960s, he taught in Africa. He then returned to Italy and continued his intense activity as a painter and exhibitor in various European countries, especially Germany. Luigi Pignataro passed away in Florence on July 28, 2009.
