Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In his works dedicated to female figures, we can appreciate how Luigi Rocca's style is based on a perfect expressive balance between naturalistic rendering and coloristic synthesis. Indeed, the female figure appears in all its naturalness and anatomical truth, thanks to the artist's flawless technique, which manages to depict the character with vivacity and a sense of plasticity, placing her in a concrete and real space. The figure is softened by the light and, therefore, appears alive and vibrant in its existence in space. At the same time, however, the artist also achieves a marked formal synthesis: starting from the woman's dress, the pictorial approach becomes more expressionistic. The dense and textured brushstrokes transfigure the subject, who now seems to dissolve into the color and chromatic substance, achieving a highly lyrical and evocative representation. The figure thus blends perfectly into the space, where even the room is constructed through a highly dynamic and expressive approach.
Luigi Rocca was born in Udine in 1952 and trained under Pontecorvo. Rocca is an artist who primarily works in traditional genres, such as portraiture and landscape. His interpretation, however, demonstrates a constant experimental approach to interpretation, leading to innovation within the classical genre. This experimental approach is expressed in a marked emphasis on the pictorial element, achieving an expressionist synthesis. The expressionistic element blends seamlessly with the always impeccable naturalistic rendering, resulting in a highly lyrical representation.
