Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory aspect.

In the execution of this still life, artist Luigi Spazzapan adopts a decidedly Cubist and Expressionist language. He begins, first and foremost, with the desire to reconstruct sensory reality through a rigorous mechanical and geometric process. Thus, the composition is structured through clean lines that create a non-unique, multidimensional space. At the same time, the artist also demonstrates a remarkable desire for synthesis, typically Expressionist, combined with a certain harshness typical of that pictorial language. This harshness can be seen in the fragmented and angular rhythm of the work and in the choice of almost aggressive chromatic tones.
Luigi Spazzapan, born in Gradisca d'Isonzo in 1889 and died in Turin in 1958, was a Slovenian-speaking painter. His artistic training took place primarily within the Secessionist movement, with visits to Vienna and Munich. He later also became involved with the Expressionist and Futurist avant-gardes. From 1929 onwards, he became involved with the Turin Six.
