Description of the work
Description of the work
We are faced with a landscape with people in the foreground. Two wayfarers are standing on the shore of a body of water, wearing simple, heavily stitched clothing that seems to have been chosen more out of necessity than anything else. The standing figure is adjusting his hat, holding it at his fingertips as if to put it back on his head. The second figure, however, is sitting, resting. He holds a simple bowl from which he is eating, and tucked under his left arm is a fishing rod. This suggests the probable reason for their stop along the shore; perhaps the two are there specifically to fish.
This painting It should be placed within the current of naive painting. While this word may seem like a negative adjective in our everyday connotations, here it is a deliberate choice. Painters of this movement voluntarily decide to distance themselves from academic painting; they are often self-taught, choosing, based on formal and expressive qualities, to create paintings that may seem simplified in form, but it is a thoughtful and deliberate expressive choice. Here too, the overall effect is achieved through broad fields of color, clear lines that delineate the figures, and a simplified chiaroscuro. In this way, however, the painter Using bold, vivid colors, he manages to heighten the emotional impact of his painting. In this painting in particular, the background is divided into various horizontal chromatic zones, each of different hues, almost giving us the impression of a rainbow in the juxtaposition of red, yellow, blue, and green. The figures of the wayfarers in the foreground stand out from the stark horizontality of these bands; they, along with the trees and plants on the riverbank, break up the colors of the scenery. Thanks to this network created between color and drawing, the artist manages to convey perspective despite the cursory use of technical aids such as shadows and perspective lines.
Luigi Stracchi was born in Milan in 1942. He can be counted among the naïve painters of the Italian scene, active primarily in the second half of the 20th century. His painting is characterized by a unique and colorful imagination that transports us to a world of possibilities. His paintings often feature a grid-like matrix, with horizontal areas of color intersected by human figures or plants and trees whose strong verticality organizes the painting.
