Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary objective of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the human figure has permeated every era and stylistic movement. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation, the human body has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism. The present work is part of a series of graphic works in which, at the heart of Luigi Timoncini's research, we find a reflection on the human body. These graphic works can be considered, in all respects, "artist's proofs" in which Timoncini sought to refine his drawing technique in the rendering of anatomy.
In this series of graphics, we can see Luigi Timoncini's high-level technique. The composition achieves a supremely naturalistic rendering, even through the simple formal medium of graphic design. In addition to his extraordinary precision in capturing sensory information, Timoncini is also capable of bringing it to life through the interplay of shadows, achieved through precise hatching, which gently blurs the contours and renders them undefined. The realist element, developed in this work, is also significant, emerging through the characterization of the subjects' physiognomy and anatomy with expressionistic verve. Crucial in this sense is the exaltation of plastic qualities, which take on a decidedly concrete quality.
Luigi Timoncini was an artist originally from Faenza, born in 1928 and passed away in 2019. He trained in Milan at the Brera Academy and held his first exhibition at the Galleria Il Prisma in 1962. In 1975 he exhibited at the Galleria Dello Scudo in Verona and the Galleria San Fedele in Milan, and in 1976 he held a retrospective exhibition at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Faenza. His landscapes were exhibited in 1987 at the Galleria Forni in Bologna and in 1997 at the Oratorio della Passione di Sant'Ambrogio in Milan. His religious works have been shown at the Vatican Museums, the Diocesan Museum in Milan, and the Castello Sforzesco. His extensive exhibition activity includes solo shows held in Forlì (1977), Verona (1985), Gallarate (1990), the Milan Museum (1993), and Ascoli Piceno (2012). In 1991 he was invited to the exhibition “Existential Realism” held at the Palazzo della Permanente in Milan.
