Luigi Vidoni - Spilimbergo, the castle

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration over the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. This work is part of a collection of graphic works in which Luigi Vidoni drew inspiration from evocative views of his native Friuli.

In this series of graphics, artist Luigi Vidoni's style presents a perfect fusion of realism and a delicate, impressionistic rendering of sensory information. On the one hand, the artist precisely describes the view in all its details, with a strong sense of reality and a thorough desire to capture sensory information. On the other, his refined graphic technique allows him to convey a sense of immediacy to the sheet of paper, thanks to a rapid stroke, charged with atmospheric vibrations. Light thus reflects on objects, but without interfering with the precise description of reality. The entire scene is thus characterized by a clear luminosity that is revealed, by contrast, in the play of shadows.

Luigi Vidoni (1915, Tolmezzo - 2017, Cividale del Friuli). Throughout his long and varied artistic career, Vidoni has developed and refined the technique of watercolor, of which he has established himself as a master. The preferred subjects of his now mature and well-articulated pictorial language are the landscapes of Cividale, flowers, still lifes, views of Grado, and seascapes.
