Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
The painting is grounded in color, texture, and painterly gesture. These three elements combine on the support to create a composition in which form takes a step back, allowing for the unleashing of creative energy. Luigi Virili's pictorial application establishes a close dialogue of suggestions and stimuli within the painting, arising from the coexistence of overlapping textures and layers of material. The artist, however, intends to leave traces of the sensory elements and hints of figuration that appear here and there throughout the work. These are, however, absorbed by the expressive power of the material and gesture. All of this always occurs with a perfect compositional coherence that demonstrates Luigi Virili's skill in conceiving and completing his works.
Luigi Virili is an artist who has focused his research on an informal language. His works focus on the expressive power of color, texture, and gesture, which convey the artist's perception of reality.
