Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. In this painting, artist Luis Peressol draws inspiration from the araguaney tree. This plant is typical of the intertropical zone, well-known for its yellow flowers. It is certainly an ideal subject for Peressol, whose pictorial style, with its Impressionist tendencies, leverages the expressive qualities of color.
The painting was created with a remarkable Impressionist technique. The artist uses rapid brushstrokes, using hatching, to quickly delineate shapes and volumes. This allows him to capture, with each individual brushstroke, the effects of light and atmosphere on objects, and to instantly convey a wooded landscape with precise environmental and lighting conditions onto the canvas. The entire color palette is designed to reflect the precise atmospheric conditions he seeks to represent, in a perfect conception of plein air painting. Furthermore, Luis Peressol's Impressionist hatching is highly distinctive: he depicts nature with short, rapid touches of material that form a polychrome mosaic on the surface of the work. As with the Impressionists, the perspective grid is not eliminated, but spatial depth is determined exclusively through the modulations of color.
Artist Luis Peressol was born in 1927 in Santiago de Cuba and lives and works in Venezuela. He is considered Venezuela's finest artist and is called the "Monet" of Latin America. Indeed, as we can see from this work, he is a painter closely tied to an Impressionist style. His painting style fully reflects the tradition of plein air and an immediate rendering of landscapes.
