Description of the work
Description of the work
“When he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, ‘Come and see.’ And another horse came out, a red one; and power was given to him who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword.”
Referring to passages from the Apocalypse, the artist interprets the deprivation of peace on Earth by relating and concentrating it in the image of the Dragon, associated in Western cultural tradition with the forces of Chaos.
According to the precepts of ancient philosophy, supported and presented in the theses of Socrates and Aristotle, the four elements (Earth, Water, Air, and Fire) are considered the original principles of all matter, even metaphysical matter. By analogy, from an ontological perspective, when these elements are not harmonized with each other but clash and contradict each other, in addition to challenging each other in nature with devastating effects, they also fight against each other within human consciousness, thus generating aggression and murderous intent.
The Dragon depicted in the painting contains and synthesizes these four elements within itself: fire breathes from its jaws, air swirls around its wings, water is drawn through the long scaly fish tail, and earth is present in the brown sphere wrapped around the latter's coils.
The knight with the great sword represents the conscience armed with a strong will, fighting to bring order and harmony. At the top is a knot, an imaginative element used to suggest that the battle depicted does not take place within a physical, objective reality, but within.
