Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting is inspired by the Greek myth of the Argonauts, led by Jason. To regain his usurped throne, Jason is forced to set out in search of the Golden Fleece, the pelt of the golden ram endowed with exceptional healing properties. This is depicted at the top as the pinnacle of the composition and the ultimate goal of the quest.
To take possession of it, the hero must overcome some arduous tests.
In a dense and powerful synthesis, the image brings together the champion and his antagonists: the sleepless dragon , guardian of the golden cloak, and the two bulls with bronze hooves. Following a figurative tradition common to medieval language, which involves the expansion of the most significant elements of the representation, Jason's right hand is larger than life-size to underline the active action essential in the conquest.
On his shield, and therefore in what protects him, stand out the sun, expression of the awakened spirit, and the crescent moon, symbol of receptivity that will gradually increase as it opens up to inner intuitions.
