Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The artist Masaniello Luschi drew inspiration primarily from popular genre scenes set in rural settings.
Masaniello Luschi's painting style is closely connected to the artist's formative years, the Labronica School, which developed a highly refined genre and landscape painting influenced by Post-Impressionism and Post-Macchiaiolism. Indeed, the entire compositional structure of the work is based on extremely rapid, cursive brushstrokes that sketch the subject with broad strokes of diluted color. The sense of immediacy in the rendering is striking. Likewise, the importance of color is noteworthy, with the work's highly sensitive transitions of tone constituting its expressive power.
Masaniello Luschi was a painter from Livorno who was born in 1942 and died in 1995. He is a typical exponent of the Livorno school of painting, which takes up, and updates, the premises of post-impressionism and Macchiaiolism.
