Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. It is a type of subject that can be traced back to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau, Bocklin, or Puvis des Chavannes, who, while using a primarily figurative language, developed intellectually complex iconographies, full of symbolic and allegorical references. In composing his subjects, Brilli undoubtedly begins with the observation of reality, whether it be a landscape or an episode taken from everyday life. But reality is transfigured into a symbolic dimension, thanks to the originality of the representation, which features accentuated symmetries, unusual framing, and eccentric visual angles.
Brilli expresses the symbolic dimension and hidden meanings to be found in reality with his own distinctive pictorial style. His approach, in fact, is based on a figurative language, in which the drawing is highly accentuated, thus exalting the subjects' plastic qualities. However, the artist combines this formal concreteness with an extremely vibrant application of color, thanks to a lively hatching style that conveys a certain sense of evanescence and subtly shifts the representation to a conceptual/existential plane. This sensation is also fueled by the palette, based on pastel tones.
As we can see from an analysis of his works, M. Brilli is a predominantly figurative painter, favoring elaborate subjects with symbolic overtones. His technique is grounded in both concrete drawing and vibrant hatching.
