The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, which led to the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their exploration focuses instead on the materials from which their works are composed.

In his versatile research and multifaceted artistic production, Marcolino Gandini has explored various expressive languages ​​within the abstract and informal realms. In this painting, the artist reaches a pinnacle of experimentation, decisively abandoning all contact with sensory reality, creating a concrete work of pure abstraction. The work is entirely resolved through the artist's gestures. Indeed, its surface is completely monochrome, set to a neutral gray tone. The paint, however, is dense and full-bodied, allowing the artist to model the painting's surface through manipulation and shaping. This creates a hermetic yet powerfully expressive system of signs, in its incommunicability. This aura of mystery is further enhanced by the subtle presence of the geometry of the circle and the line, which almost trace a path, an attempt to rationalize and orient oneself in that jungle of signs.

Marcolino Gandini is an artist born in Turin in 1937. From a very young age, he frequented Felice Casorati's studio and participated in Turin's art scene, debuting with a solo exhibition at Palazzo Chiablese in 1958. In 1962, he exhibited at the Galleria Numero in Rome, and solo exhibitions continued throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1991, he held a comprehensive retrospective at the monumental complex of San Michele a Ripa. In 1995, he held a solo exhibition at the Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna in Turin. Marcolino Gandini worked primarily between Turin, Rome, and Venice. In Rome, he participated in the 1960s climate, exhibiting with Pascali, Ceroli, and Kounellis.
