Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In this landscape, as in several of his other works, Walter Madoi reaches the pinnacle of his expressionist poetics. The composition is entirely resolved in the foreground, with no concessions to depth. The highly abstract subject has a synthetic character, its forms resolved with few painterly gestures. The view of a forest, in a foggy atmosphere, is rendered by the painter in a uniform yet dynamic and iridescent layer of paint. In this space, the painter's diaphanous and almost instinctive marks indicate the vegetation. In this way, Walter Madoi is able to go beyond the simple recording of sensory data, creating a landscape with emotional and spiritual overtones. Even in landscape painting, therefore, Walter Madoi confirms the expressionist nature of his artistic practice.
Walter Madoi, 1925-1976, was a painter who left numerous works in the Parma area. He specialized in genre painting but especially in portraiture. His work reveals a strong influence from Expressionism, especially Northern European Expressionism, with its angularity and extreme synthesis. In other cases, however, he seems to reevaluate objectivity in favor of more natural portraits, yet always hollow and devoid of real weight. His research, in short, is always oriented towards exploring what lies beyond form, towards the true essence of the subjects and people portrayed.
