Description of the work
Description of the work
The Holy Family refers to the composition of Jesus' family. The traditional iconography of the Holy Families, which began to appear in Italian art as an independent subject in the second half of the 15th century, features the central nucleus of the Child Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. The various variations of this iconographic model depend on the inclusion of additional figures who are related to Jesus, such as Saint Anne, mother of Mary, or the young Saint John, often included with a prophetic function of Christ's Passion.
The execution of this painting exhibits an exquisitely Baroque spirit, both in its composition and in the pictorial technique employed. Compositionally, we can see how, in keeping with a typically 17th-century conception harking back to the great naturalism of the Renaissance, the subject is exalted in monumental plasticity. Specifically Baroque, however, is the artist's emphasis on the ample drapes of Mary's robe, which swell her forms in an extremely dynamic and flowing compositional rhythm. The complex twists of the figures also follow the same dynamism, in a theatrical tension pushed almost to the limit, which is, again, typical of the Baroque spirit. Furthermore, from an executional perspective, we can see how the artist is perfectly in line with the pictorial methods in vogue between the 17th and 18th centuries, in the sense of a highly atmospheric, almost synthetic, rendering in some passages, with a strong emphasis on sfumato.
The work has been attributed to a 17th-century artist from Campania. The painter displays a style reminiscent of the Neapolitan Baroque, and in particular of Luca Giordano, from whom he may have drawn inspiration.
