Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
In this work, Mafonso completely transcends any formal means to transfer all his complex emotions to the canvas without any mediation. Thus, the medium becomes a fertile ground in which the artist can cultivate his own gestures. This is expressed in a series of broken lines that create a complex dynamic. The color application is material, in keeping with the incommunicability of the informal.
Alfonso Marino, known by his stage name Mafonso, was born in Frattaminore in 1948. Initially, his work moved in the direction of an informal language, later drawing inspiration from the Transavanguardia movement. Mafonso has divided his work into distinct pictorial cycles such as Prime nevi sul dopo 2000 (1983), Make-Make (1988-90), Nevicate acide (1993-97), and Cloni (1998-2002). He has participated in numerous exhibitions and events throughout Europe, including a solo show at Art Basel in 1985. Between 1994 and 1998, he exhibited at Miart in Milan and Artissima in Turin. In 1990, he published the book Makè Makè, which was exhibited at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He was one of the founders of the Cosa Mentale group in 1979.
