Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion.
An extremely eclectic figure in the artistic scene, Magharbeh Wahid fuels his pictorial production from numerous sources, among which inspiration from the art of the past undoubtedly stands out. In the case of this Madonna and Child, a clear reference to Roberto Ferruzzi's famous work is evident. Magharbeh Wahid's interpretation of the ancient model, however, is always original and personal. His pictorial style, characterized by a lean, objectifying form, is characteristic. The exaltation of the figure's plastic qualities predominates, through a compact brushstroke and a markedly structured design. The palette, distinguished by the use of intense, bright colors, is highly evocative.
Magharbeh Wahid is a Syrian artist born in Aleppo in 1942. He displays a high level of academic technique. He remains faithful to a concept of art based on the imitation of nature and allows little subjectivity. His style is therefore very realistic, yet shows some traits of idealization.
