Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The work, compared to the style of Alessandro Magnasco, features a typical subject in this artist's production: acrobats and jugglers. A refined and restless painter of popular subjects, Magnasco is famous for his genre scenes dedicated to the world of the circus and street performers.
The work, likened to the manner of Magnasco, is strongly influenced by the Genoese artist's style. In addition to the circus subject, it also reflects his execution. Typical of Magnasco is the predominantly expressionistic approach, which characterizes the depiction of deformations and sudden flashes of light in a predominantly leaden atmosphere. This stylistic approach has been compared to that of El Greco, but in Magnasco, not only in his large-scale altarpieces of religious subjects, but also in his small-format genre scenes. The present work is strongly influenced by this poetics, demonstrating a closeness to Alessandro Magnasco's style.
From these considerations, it can be deduced that the work was created by an artist active between the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He presents himself as an excellent interpreter of the genre scene that was beginning to spread precisely in that period, and he interprets it in the restless manner typical of Alessandro Magnasco.
